Thomas Hoepker first met Muhammad Ali on assignment in 1960 and photographed the heavyweight champion of the world several times. Pictured here, Ali is showing his left fist to the camera. “On my 1966 contact sheet, this image looked hopelessly underexposed, dark and dirty. But when I scanned the negative, I saw another aspect of the ‘Greatest’ – Ali, the dark and brutal fighter, but also Muhammad Ali, the wounded and scarred victim who had taken countless blows from his opponents throughout his career,” Hoepker said.

BIOGRAPHY
Thomas Hoepker (*1936 in Munich, † 10. Juli 2024 in Santiago de Chile) had his first experiences with the medium of photography at the age of 14. While still a student, he won two Photokina awards and from 1959 worked regularly as a commissioned photographer for magazines and book publications. He devoted himself to photojournalism and later also became interested in the moving image, made films and worked as a cameraman. In 1974, he went to East Berlin as the first accredited photographer for the “Stern” magazine, where he temporarily worked as art director. In 1989, Thomas Hoepker became the first German photographer to become a full member of the Magnum Photos agency and led it as president from 2003 to 2007. His photojournalistic work took him to many poor areas of the world: he avoided the blatant exposure of conditions, which made the “subtle image” the stylistic hallmark of his visual language, which is also known as “concerned photography”. To date, Thomas Hoepker’s work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide. His portraits of Muhammad Ali are world famous and part of numerous book publications.
