The overhead photographs in Johnny Miller’s series “Unequal Scenes” vividly visualize the transitions, boundaries and divisions between different districts and territories. Taken with the help of a drone, they show the economic and social inequalities of people in an impressive way. This unusual perspective and the formal aesthetics of the images create a fascinating pattern of abstractions that simultaneously points to the complex interrelationships of global developments.

The photographs allow us to take a completely new look at the visual and social transition areas within urban spaces. In their topographical and abstract appearance, Johnny Miller’s photographs are in the visual tradition of the works of Michael Wolf and Andreas Gursky. Unlike many contemporary works, however, these photographs are not digitally manipulated; they show us the reality of the world at a precise point in time. The overhead photographs allow us to read the organizational structures of social divisions and thus illustrate the dependencies between social areas.

Miller began the “Unequal Scenes” project with the aim of highlighting the unequal borders and territories in South Africa, where barriers and boundaries were erected during the apartheid regime to separate urban spaces and isolate people of different classes. Since then, the project has expanded to numerous countries, including the USA, India, Mexico, Nigeria and the Philippines, and offers an insightful look at how economic interests continue to shape spatial development to this day. Johnny Miller’s particular focus is on shots in the megacities and territories of the global South.

Johnny Miller, Yucatán, Mexico, 2024, #2
In the series “Salt Works”, Johnny Miller presents overhead photographs of sea salt production facilities in Walvis Bay (Namibia), Yucatán (Mexico) and San Francisco (USA). The seawater is channeled into artificially created shallow basins, which often have intense red to violet colors caused by halophilic bacteria. The mining of sea salt is one of the oldest forms of raw material extraction and is an early human intervention in nature.

Miller’s compositions abstract the landscape and transform it into paintings, with formal beauty and modernity reflecting the exploitation and associated destruction of the environment. These photographs question the processes of production and the dependencies between the producers and the global markets that benefit from these raw materials – a boundary that still seems insurmountable.

Johnny Miller is currently a Senior Fellow at Code For Africa and a Senior Atlantic Fellow for Social and Economic Justice at the London School of Economics. He is the co-founder of africanDRONE, a pan-African organization promoting the sustainable use of drones. Miller attended Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, USA, and the University of Cape Town in South Africa.
